Chapter 9 — The Teachings of Christ Flashcards
(35 cards)
Christ showed Himself to be a master teacher in that He
Loved and knew His students.
Christ taught by using
Rhetorical questions, lectures, and storytelling.
Which Gospel writer appeals to the Jew’s respect for teachers and teaching?
Matthew
Mark mentions Christs teachings less than the other Synoptic accounts because he
Emphasizes Christ’s actions more than His words.
In Luke’s Gospel, Christ’s teachings are
Given in the form of parables and scattered throughout the narrative.
How were Christ’s teachings linked to His redemptive purpose?
They demonstrated His credibility as an acceptable person and thus as an appropriate sacrifice.
What can we conclude about the Scriptures based on Christ’s teachings?
Since He believed and used them, He regarded them as genuine.
What did Christ teach about God, Himself, and the Holy Spirit?
The Godhead is a Trinity of three distinct Persons, each of whom expresses the qualities of personality: intellect, feeling, and will.
What did Christ teach concerning the church?
In Christ’s time, the church was future, and it would withstand the gates of Hell.
Christ’s teaching on future things indicates that
His second coming is the focal point of the future and is linked with the resurrection and judgement.
Explain briefly how Christ used teachings as His primary means of communicating truth to His disciples.
He used teaching within small groups, providing an opportunity for interaction. Teaching was thus an ideal means for communicating truth to His disciples.
Briefly name the characteristics of Christ as Master Church.
As the Master Teacher, Jesus (a) loved His students, (b) knew the nature of His students, (c) knew His subject, (d) knew how to use different teaching methods, (e) lived what He taught.
Give brief analysis of Christ’s teaching methods.
He used methods that were appropriate for His purpose of making disciples. Most of His teaching was life-centered and informal, and it was practical, stimulating, and successful. The disciples were thus ready for their mission when they left Him.

Rhetorical question
Explain how Matthew deals with Jesus’ teachings.
Matthew groups the teachings of Christ by topic rather than by chronology into some six divisions.
Describe briefly how Mark treats the teachings of Christ.
Mark does not deal at length with Christ’s teachings. He refers often to Christ as Teacher and records that others, especially religious leaders, used this term of Him also.
Name the only teaching section in Mark that can be classified as discourse.
The Olivet Discourse, which concerns future events.
List at least three characteristics of Luke’s treatment of the teachings of Christ.
Luke gives a balanced treatment between that of Matthew and Mark. He focuses mainly on a Gentile audience, but His account has a universal appeal. He presents Christ’s teaching in the form of parables, and he scatters it throughout his narrative. He gives us some unique material between 9:51 and 18:30.
Compare and contrast the treatment that Mark and Luke give to Christ’s teachings.
Both wrote to Gentiles who were interested in works more than words. Luke has a wider appeal than Mark since he also focuses on the Jew, and he includes more teachings than Mark does. Both scatter Christ’s teachings throughout their Gospels.
