Chapter 9: Transport in animals Flashcards
(26 cards)
double circulatory system
system in which blood passes through the heart twice on one complete circuit of the body
single circulatory system
system in which blood passes through the heart only once on one complete circuit onf the body
atria
thin walled chambers at the top of the heart that receive the blood
ventricles
the thick-walled chambers at the base of the heart, which pump out blood
septum
the structue that seperates the left and right side of the heart as well as the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
pulmonary veins
the veins carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium (of the heart)
pulmonary artery
the artery that carries the deoxiginated bloodmfrom the right ventricle to the lungs
atrioventricular valves
a valve between an atrium abd a ventricle in the heart which allows blood to flow through from the atrium to the ventricle but not in the opposite direction
semilunar valves
valves close to the entrances to the aorta and pulmonary artery, which prevents the blood from flowing backwards
coronary arteries
vessels that deliver oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
coronary heart disease
disease caused by the blockage of the coronary arteries
Artery
thick-walled vessel that takes th e blood away from the heart
capillary
a tiny vessel (only once cell thick) that takes blood to body cells
vein
thin-walled vessel that takes low-pressure blood back to the heart
hepatic artery
blood vessel that supplies the liver with oxygenated blood
hepatic vein
the blood vessels that carry blood away from the liver
plasma
liquid part of blood
red blood cells
biconcave blood cells with no nucleas to transport oxygen
white blood cells
blood cells with nucleas which help defend against pathogens
platelets
tiny cell fragments present in blood that help with clotting
haemoglobin
red pigment found within the red blood cells which combine reversibly with oxygen (is protein)
phagocytosis
taking bacteria into cell’s cyptoplasm and digesting them with enzymes
phagocytes
white blood cells that destroy pathogens by phagocytosis
lymphocytes
white blood cells that secrete antibodies
