Q

How and why does Okonkwo insult Osugo at their meeting?

A

Okonkwo insults Osugo during the meeting by criticizing him for playing the flute instead of
working on his farm. Okonkwo values hard work and despises what he perceives as
weakness or anything that goes against traditional gender roles. When he sees Osugo
playing the flute, he views it as a sign of idleness and effeminacy, which triggers Okonkwo’s
disdain. The insult is a manifestation of Okonkwo’s rigid beliefs and his need to assert his
own values of hard work, masculinity, and strength in the community.

Q

What kind of person is Ikemefuna? What does Okonkwo think of him?

A

Ikemefuna is introduced as a teenage boy from a neighboring village who becomes a captive
and is given to Umuofia as a part of the peace settlement. He is initially a member of the
Mbaino tribe but is brought to Umuofia to live with Okonkwo’s family. Ikemefuna is a strong
and handsome young man, and he quickly adapts to the customs of Umuofia. Initially,
Okonkwo sees Ikemefuna as a potential threat, but as time goes on, he becomes fond of the
boy. Okonkwo appreciates Ikemefuna’s strength and work ethic, and the boy starts to call
Okonkwo “father.” However, Okonkwo’s feelings towards Ikemefuna become complicated
due to the tragic events that unfold later in the story.

Q

How and why does Okonkwo commit a crime during the Week of Peace?

A

During the sacred “Week of Peace,” Okonkwo commits a crime by beating his wife, Ojiugo.
The Week of Peace is a highly revered period in Umuofia where any form of violence or
disruption is strictly forbidden. It is considered a time of unity, respect, and reverence for
the earth goddess, Ani. Okonkwo’s crime stems from his uncontrollable temper. Ojiugo
went to braid her hair and returned late, leading to Okonkwo’s anger. In a fit of rage,
Okonkwo beats her, violating the sacred peace of the week. This act not only goes against
the cultural norms but also demonstrates Okonkwo’s impulsive and aggressive nature,
which will have consequences within the community.
