Chapter One Flashcards
(11 cards)
What can electrons in the outer shell do once given a little energy
Break free and become free electrons
A body having a surplus of electrons will be
negatively charged
What are the three electrical quantities called
Voltage, Current, Resistance
A body that is deficient in electrons will be
Positively charged
What is Voltage
Voltage is the difference in charge between two points
What is Current
Current is the rate of flow of electric charge in a body
What is an Insulator
Materials which all the outer electrons are committed to binding together. Only extreme heat will break them.
What is a Semiconductor
Materials which some outer electrons can be freed at room temperature by moderate electrical fields
Examples of Semiconductors
Silicon and Germanium
What is a conductor
Materials with outer electrons that are not committed to binding atoms together. Free electrons are easily produced
Examples of conductor
Copper, Iron and Gold
