What theory is Feminism?
A conflict structuralism theory. There is conflict in society based on gender. Men and women are not equal
What is a structuralist theory?
The theory that we are shaped and controlled by society
What is a conflict theory?
theories that see society as being made up of two or more groups with competing and incompatible interests
What are the six patriarchal social structures?
- Paid Work
- The household
- The state
- Mass media
- Sexuality
- Violence against women
What are the four different strands of feminism?
Radical, Marxist, Liberal and Postmodern
What is Radical feminism?
Men are the enemy - women face inequality in every part of society
What is Marxist feminism?
Capitalism is the main source of women’s oppression. Women doing the ‘double-shift’ of housework and paid work
What is liberal feminism?
They want to bring about gender equality for women and men by making changes in the law
What is post-modern feminism?
No single meaning of what it is to be a woman. Women face differing challenges (trans, non-binary)
What are some criticisms of Radical feminism?
- Too extreme and impractical
- Many women are in happy, fulfilling relationships with men
What are some criticisms of Marxist feminism?
- It’s men, not just capitalism that benefit from the subordination of women
- What about role reversal relationships
What are some criticisms of Liberal feminism?
- Changing the law is not enough - more needs to be done
What are some criticisms of Postmodern feminism?
- Focus on diversity can make it challenging to address common issues faced by all women
