- Poirot requests Sheppard to stay and he asks who the murderer is - Poirot says there is no escape. - states the significance of the phone call as otherwise the body wouldn't be found until the next day and the murderer had to collect something. - Poirot reveals Sheppard as who had the opportunity to do this.

- Sheppard says he is insane and Poirot adds details that prove his analysis. - Talks about timings and reveals Poirot’s motivation was Mrs Ferrars telling of Sheppard as her blackmailer to Roger. - Phone call was placed by his patients - Poirot says he told Sheppard before so Caroline spared.

- Sheppard says he planned on writing an account of how he deceived Poirot and got away with murder. - He always planned to murder Roger as he thought Ferrars would tell her - he is pleased with his misdirections and writings. - His plan was ruined by the involvement of everyone else, the chair and Caroline. - He wants to protect her by killing himself, but takes no responsibility
