What were the results of the 1979?
Conservatives had a 70 seat majority (339 seats) which was largely decided in London and the south as Labour retained support in the north. An enlarged middle class resented strikes and the power of the trade unions which Labour had failed to deal with. Libera vote dropped due to the former alliance with Callaghan
What were the results of the 1983 election?
130 seat majority to conservatives - due to the Falkland’s war which increased popularity and Labour was split (Michael Foot and SDP)
Describe the events of the Falklands war
In April 1983, Argentinian dictator, Galteri sent forces to the Falkland Islands which was 400 miles of the coast of South America and 8,000 from Britain. Argentina had always claimed the islands but the population was almost all British. Thatcher immediately sent forces and after a short war (April - June 1982) Argentina surrendered and retreated. Thatcher a national hero but there was some controversy around the sinking of the Belgrano.
