Characteristics of the State
Population, territory, sovereignty, government
Introduction to the constitution that states the purposes of our government
Preamble
A type of government in which one person or a small group has absolute power and the people can not do anything about who is in control
Dictatorship
Government by the people; power to the people; Direct and Indirect are examples
Democracy
A system of government in which the powers of the government are divided between the national, state and local level
Federal government (federalism)
Something you “have to” do if asked; Ex. Serve on a jury or pay taxes
Duty
Something you “should do” as a citizen; Ex. Vote
Responsibility
In a Free Enterprise System individuals, not the government decides what to make, how to make it, what price to sell for and whether to buy it or not……often referred to as CAPITALISM.
Free Enterprise System (Economic System)
Signed in 1776; it declared the United States was now free of England and listed all of the abuses the colonists had to endure for years…………Thomas Jefferson (Main writer)
Declaration of Independence
French writer that said even an elected legislature can abuse power so if you want to prevent tyranny, you have to separate power within your government

Revolutionary War
English writer that supported changing a government or removing it from power if that government abuses power and denies basic rights.
John Locke
The first plan of government for the US after the Revolutionary War; gave majority of power to individual states and little to no power to national government…..would be replaced by the US Constitution.
Articles or Confederation
National government (Congress) had limited power……..very difficult to pass laws……….could not TAX……no lead executive or presidential leader.
Flaws of the Articles of Confederation
Government plan that replaced the Articles of Confederation………“Supreme Law of the Land”…….focused on powers granted to the government as well as limitations on their powers……1787
U.S. Constitution
Branches of Government
Legislative, Executive and Judicial
Power shared by the national and state governments. (EX. Taxes)
Concurrent Power
Congress……number one job is to make laws
Legislative Branch
President…….number one job is to carry out laws
Executive Branch
Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, and Petition
1st Amendment
Supreme Court/Court System……number one job is to interpret the meaning of laws
Judicial Branch
Used to keep the government from getting too powerful in one branch……gives each branch a way to “check” the other when they get out of line to balance the powers back where they belong.
Checks and Balances
Dividing power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government…….powers specific to each branch
