Characteristic Impedance Flashcards
(27 cards)
Opposition to the transfer of energy in a cable, measured at the input when its length is infinite
characteristic impedance (Zo)
Also known as surge impedance and intrinsic impedance.
What does it mean if a line is terminated in its Zo?
The line is called non-resonant, resistive, or flat line.
In a lossless transmission line, how are voltage (V) and current (I) related?
V and I are constant in phase.
How do V and I behave in a line with loss?
They are reduced exponentially.
What is the formula for characteristic impedance (Zo) of a transmission line?
Zo = Z / Y
Where Z is series impedance and Y is shunt admittance.
What does the formula Zo = (R + jωL) / (G + jωC) represent?
The characteristic impedance of a transmission line.
What is the nature of Zo for a purely resistive line?
Zo = RL
What is the nature of Zo for a purely inductive line?
Zo = 0 + jωL
What is the nature of Zo for a purely capacitive line?
Zo = 0 - jωC
What is the significance of the propagation constant (δ)?
It determines the variation of current and voltage with distance along a transmission line.
What does α represent in the propagation constant?
Attenuation constant (dB/uL, Neper/uL)
What does β represent in the propagation constant?
Phase shift / phase delay constant (˚/uL, rad/uL)
What is the formula for time delay (td) in a transmission line?
td = L * C
What happens when a signal reaches the load in a transmission line?
Signals may be totally absorbed, partially absorbed, or not absorbed (total reflection).
The relationship of the reflected signal to that of the incident signal.
reflection coefficient (Γ)?
What is the range of values for the reflection coefficient (Γ)?
-1 ≤ Γ ≤ 1
What is the characteristic impedance of a matched line?
Zo = ZL and Γ = 0
What is the characteristic impedance for a short-circuited line?
Zo = 0 and Γ = -1
What is the characteristic impedance for an open-circuited line?
Zo = infinite and Γ = 1
What is the equation for the standing wave ratio (SWR)?
SWR = (1 + |Γ|) / (1 - |Γ|)
What happens to the voltage in a mismatched line?
There will be maximum and minimum voltage.
How is the impedance of an infinitely long section of cable determined?
Using the characteristic impedance of the cable.
What two parameters are used to calculate the time delay in a delay line?
Inductance and capacitance.
What is the formula for the propagation speed (V) in a transmission line?
V = 1 / √(LC)
