Characteristics If Life 2 Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the first step in the Methods of Scientific Inquiry?
Making Observations & Asking Questions
What follows after making observations in Scientific Inquiry?
Thinking Critically
What is developed after thinking critically?
Developing hypotheses & Conducting Investigations
What is the final step in the Methods of Scientific Inquiry?
Communicating Information
What is a hypothesis?
A possible answer or tentative explanation for what you have observed.
What is a hypothesis based on?
It is based off past evidence or experience.
What does a hypothesis lead to?
It leads to a prediction.
What is a key requirement for hypotheses?
Hypotheses must be testable!
Can hypotheses be confirmed with absolute certainty?
No, hypotheses can be eliminated, but not confirmed with absolute certainty.
What is a theory?
A general set of principles that explain some natural phenomenon and has been proven over and over.
It explains a broad range of observations.
What is a natural law?
A principle based from the study of nature that has not been disproven by scientific inquiry.
What are examples of natural laws?
Behavior of light, interactions of atoms, movement of molecules
Why are natural laws vital to biology?
Many biological events occurred before people were actually around to observe them.
This includes the diversity and evolution of living organisms.
What is the first step of the scientific method?
Observe the world around you.
What is the second step of the scientific method?
Ask questions.
What is the third step of the scientific method?
Make a hypothesis.
What is the fourth step of the scientific method?
Design an experiment.
What is the fifth step of the scientific method?
Communicate results.
What are the steps in Experimental Science?
- Ask a question
- Do background research
- Construct a hypothesis
- Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment
- Analyze your data and draw a conclusion
- Report your results.
What should you do to determine if your hypothesis was correct?
Was your hypothesis correct?
