Define depression
a mental disorder characterised by low mood and low energy levels
-It’s a CHANGE in behaviour and mood levels
How does the DSM-5 categories depression
(4 types)
1- major depressive order (severe but short term)
2- persistent depressive disorder (long term/reaccuring)
3-disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (childhood temper tantrum)
4- pre menstrual dysphoric disorder (change in mood during/before menstruation)
How are the 3 characteristics of depression categorised?
Behavioural (how we act)
Emotional (how we feel)
Cognitive (how we think)
What are 4 behavioural characteristics of depression?
-change in activity levels (psychomotor agitation- fidget or lack of energy-less social interaction)
-change in sleep (struggle to stay/fall asleep)
-change in eating (too much or too little)
-aggression and self harm (can lead to social isolation)
What are the 3 emotional characteristics of depression?
1- Lowered mood (more than just sadness)
2-Anger (feeling before aggression)
3- Lowered self esteem (leads to self loathing- dislike self)
What are the 3 cognitive characteristics of depression?
1- Poor concentration (struggle to focus and make decision)
2- Attending to the negative (focusing on or bias towards the negative)
3- Absolutist thinking (everything’s either good or bad, they think its always bad and catastrophise it to be ‘awful’)
