Characteristics of life Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is the study of life?
Biology
What is the term used to help you remember all of the characteristics of life?
Dr. Rcog
How many characteristics of life are there?
There are 6 characteristics of life
What are the 6 characteristics of life?
DNA, Reproduction, Responding to enviroment, Cells (Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic), Obtains energy, Grows and develops
What does DNA do?
It determines the traits of all living organisms
What are the two main cell categories?
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
Where is DNA stored?
DNA is stored in cells
Where is DNA inherited from?
DNA is inherited from an organism’s parent(s).
What does “prokaryotic” mean?
Prokaryotic means before the nucleus and it also a single celled organism
Prokaryotic cells dont have a nucleus where does there DNA located?
DNA floats in the cytoplasm of this type of cell.
Where is the DNA housed in the Eukaryotic cell?
DNA is housed in the nucleus of this type of cell.
What are examples of organisms that are made up of
prokaryotic cells?
Bacteria are examples of the prokaryotic cell type. An example is E.coil.
What are 2 types of cells are both eukaryotic cells?
Plant and animal cells
Prokaryotic cells are the most complex cells. True or False?
False becuase Eukaryotic cells are the biggest.
Eukaryotic cells evolved from prokaryotic cells. True or False?
True
Which category of cells makes up unicellular organisms
((Prokaryote, Eukaryote, or both)?
Both
What is the process by which organisms give rise to offspring?
Reproduction
What are the two categories of reproducers?
Asexual and Sexual
Which type of reproducer is made up of only one parent?
Asexual
Offspring from which type of reproducer develops from the combination of receiving 50% chromosomes from a female parent and 50% chromosomes from a male parent?
Sexual
Which type of reproduction requires 2 parents from each gender (1 male, 1 female) to create offspring?
Sexual
How does offspring develop from asexual reproductions?
Asexual reproduction produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent because the offspring are all clones of the original parent
What are cells?
The building blocks of all living things.
What are the 3 rules of Cell Theory?
all living things are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the basic unit of life; and new cells arise from existing cells.
