Define schizophrenia

A

one of the most chronic and disabling mental illnesses that affects thought processes and described as the disintegration of personality, features a split between thinking and emotion and involves a range of psychotic symptoms.
-patients lack insight into their condition as they don’t realise their ill

Auditory hallucinations

A

when an individual hears voices. The voices can sound so real the individual becomes convinced they are truly coming from outside them, find it hard to work out why others cannot hear them. Individual may feel that they have to do what the voices are telling them to do.

Disordered thinking

A

confused and muddled thinking, therefore the individual cannot concentrate on everyday tasks and connect their own thoughts. Seem to wander off their own and drift from idea to idea . Can be difficult for other people to follow their train of thought

How can negative symptoms affect a schizophrenic’s behaviour?

A

Reduction in normal behaviours
-isolated and socially withdrawn
-not the same person to family and friends
-interest in life, energy and emotions drained away

A

lack the effort and energy to do everyday things and no desire to learn new things, meet new people or have new experiences and don’t care about your own problems.

reduced ability to experience pleasure and things that used to bring pleasure no longer do. Inappropriate emotional expressions

poverty of speech, reduction in amount of speech used. People with schizophrenia lack meaning even simple short answers can be a problem.

not well kept may not be able to take care of themselves

Catatonic movement
ranges from fast repetitive movements to little or no movements at all. Unexpected gestures and loud utterances

Echopraxia
mimic movements of people around them or remain immobile for long time in uncomfortable positions.

affects 35-40% of sufferers main features include delusions of persecution and hallucinations
