charge distribution on a metal body Flashcards
(9 cards)
state the law of charge distribution on metal bodies
whenever charge is given to a metal body it distributes on the outer surface in such a manner to make net electric field inside the body equal to zero.
electric field due to a large uniformly charged CONDUCTING sheet
σ/⋲o
(both surfaces add up)
charge induction in metal bodies
if a metal body is placed in an electric field, induction on the body surface starts and continous flow of electrons in the body takes place till the net electric field inside the body becomes zero
E-Ei = 0
thus we can also say that when all charges in a metal body are at rest, net electric field at every interior point of body is zero as it balances the external field
electric field due to uniformly charged CONDUCTING solid sphere
for x>R
E= KQ/x^2
for x=R
E= KQ/R^2
for x<R
E=0
electric field strength due to uniformly charged CONDUCTING hollow sphere
same as conducting solid sphere
electric field strength due to uniformly charged NON-CONDUCTING solid sphere
out- KQ/x^2
surface- KQ/x^2
inside-[ KQenclosed/x^2 - Kqx/R^3 or if volume charge density is given- ρx/3⋲o
x is distance from centre
electric field due to a (long) uniformly charged CONDUCTING cylinder
outside- σR/x⋲o
