‘mouth of hell’ soldiers know battle is life or death but their bravery refuses natural desire for life to get better for them. soldiers may have sinful past- explains y they woudl go to hell. unlikelt, as focus of poem is not on complexity of human nature and sinfulness, but bravery and nobility of soldier and that their lives were wasted.
