- anaphora - re-create the sound of the soldiers charging the repetition suggest the danger that the soldiers are in slows down time they’ll never get to the Russian guns forces us to realise their fate is likely to be death

-literary illusion reference to the Bible gives the poem a Christian background suggesting the charge to murder people isn’t actually murder because God is on their side the souls of the dead soldiers will be accepted into heaven by God this is the Christian perspective. Tennyson gives the reader to show that God is just on our side.
“ theirs but to do and die”
Alliteration emphasises that death is inevitable ‘d’
Shows the heroism of soldiers tells us even they know they’re going to die they do it for their country. They’re celebrating that as a quintessentially British concept it’s the true mark of a hero.
“And” included to show there is no escape from death
“While all the world wondered”
Is he really celebrating the heroism but is he also attacking the society that expects this sacrifice from men? There’s a repeated in the final stanza. Tony does not want his readers to get away without questioning what happened here element of questioning and disapproval that is deliberate
-“wondered” disrupt the ducktails because he’s disrupted by the thought of why the men have been sacrificed
-“wondered” - to rhyme with “blundered”to emphasise the word “blundered” and emphasise the man who died “hundred” also suggesting the rest of the world is wondering how we could do this to the men
- “Honour” Anna fora leaving the reader to celebrate the heroism of the soldiers newspapers were starting to criticise the leadership. He feels a duty of patriotism as he can’t publicly accuse the generals. Instead his side steps that and celebrates the bravery and glory of the man. Honour is his public message - “ all the world wondered” is his secret and true belief
