chem Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Ionic solids
A
form crystal lattices
hard, brittle substances that have high melting points
ionic bonds are stronger so harder to break
don’t conduct in solid form
2
Q
Metallic solids
A
electrons can freely move from orbital to orbital
good conductors
have luster
have high melting points ionic
3
Q
Molecular Solids
A
patterns in orderly 3D pattern with IMFS holding them together
soft
low melting points why? weaker imf
4
Q
Network covalent solids
A
held together 2D or 3D networks containing covalent bonds (infra)
very high melting points
you’d have to break many strong covalent bonds
rigid and hard cause these bonds are fixed
