Net ionic equation for acid/base
H+(aq) + OH-(aq) --> H2O(l)
29
How to write complete/net ionic equations
Determine which is precipitate (solid) using solubility rules and that polyatomic ion stays together while other ions dissociate
30
Water Solubility Rules for Salts
1. Most salts of GROUP 1 metals (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) and AMMONIUM (NH4+) are SOLUBLE
2. Most salts of NITRATE (NO3-) and ACETATE (CH3COO-) are PERCHLORATE (PClO4-) are SOLUBLE
3. Most salts of Ag+, Pb2+, and Hg+ are INSOLUBLE
4. Most salts of Cl-, Br-, and I- (halogens) are SOLUBLE
5. Most CARBONATES (CO3 2-), PHOSPHATES (PO4 3-), SULFIDES (S2-), HYDROXIDES (OH-), OXIDES (O2-), and CHROMATES (CrO4 2-) are INSOLUBLE
- However, SULFIDES and HYDROXIDES of Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ are SLIGHTLY SOLUBLE
6. Most SULFATES (SO4 2-) are SOLUBLE, except those of Ca 2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+, which are INSOLUBLE
