Chem H - Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
(10 cards)
What affects the rate of reaction?
Temperature
Concentration
SA
Pressure
Catalyst
How do catalysts increase the rate of reaction.?
Catalysts provide an alternative pathway, which lowers the activation energy so when the particles collide, they would have more frequent successful collisions. Enzymes are catalysts in biological systems
How does temperature increase the rate of reaction?
If temperature increases and heat is added, the particles would have more kinetic energy and therefore move around faster. This would lead to more frequent collisions and therefore more frequent successful collisions.
How does concentration increase the rate of reaction?
If there is more concentration, there are more particles available meaning more particles are able to collide resulting in more frequent successful collisions
How would pressure increase the rate of reaction?
By increasing the pressure, there are more particles in a given volume. Thus leads to more collisions and therefore more frequent successful collisions
How does the SA increase the rate of reaction?
If the surface area is larger, this means more particles are exposed. This leads to more collisions therefore more frequent successful collisions
What is the equation for rate?
Rate = amount of reactant used or product made/time
What is collisions theory
Chemical reactions occur when particles collide with each other and with enough energy to
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy that particles must have to react.
