Chemical Analysis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound with a fixed melting and boiling point (e.g., pure water).
What is a formulation?
A mixture designed for a purpose (e.g., paint, medicine) with precise amounts of components.
How does chromatography separate substances?
By differences in solubility: substances more soluble in the mobile phase move further.
What is the Rf value?
( R_f = \frac{\text{distance moved by substance}}{\text{distance moved by solvent front}} ) (equation provided on sheet).
How to test for oxygen gas?
Glowing splint relights in oxygen.
How to test for hydrogen gas?
Lit splint produces a squeaky pop.
How to test for carbon dioxide gas?
Bubble through limewater → turns cloudy/white.
How to test for chlorine gas?
Damp blue litmus paper bleached white.
