Q

Test for hydrogen

A

Hold a burning splint at the open end of the test tube, if a squeaky pop is heard then hydrogen is present in the tube (the pop is from the oxygen and hydrogen reacting quickly in the air to form water)

7
Q

Test for carbonate ions

A

.Use a dropping pipette and add a few drops of dilute acid to a test tube containing your mystery substance
.Connect the test tube to a test tube containing lime water, if carbonate ions were present then CO2 would have been released from reaction with the acid which will turn the lime water cloudy when it bubbles through

11
Q

Why is hydrochloric acid added in the test for sulfate ions?

A

Get rid of any traces of carbonate ions as these would also produce a precipitate and confuse the results

23
Q

Describe the steps involved in carrying out a flame test

A

.Clean a nichrome or platinum wire loop by rubbing it with fine emery paper and then holding it in a blue flame from a bunsen burner
.The flame might change color for a bit, once it turns blue again the loop is clean
.Dip the loop into the sample you want to test and put it back into the flame
.Record the color of the flame

24
Q

What happens if you flame test substances with a mixture of different metal ions?

A

The flame colors of some ions may mask or hide the other colors

25
Q

Describe the metal hydroxide test for metals

A

.Add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution to a solution of your mystery compound
.Note down the color of the precipitate formed

26
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does Calcium form?

A

White

27
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does Copper (II) form?

A

Blue

28
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does Iron (II) form?

A

Green

29
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does Iron (III) form?

A

Brown

30
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does Aluminium form?

A

White at first, then dissolves in the excess NaOH to form a colorless solution

31
Q

In the metal hydroxide test for metals, what color precipitate does magnesium form?

A

White

32
Q

Ca^2+(aq) + 2OH- (aq) –>

A

34
Q

What can line spectra do?

A

Identify ions in a solution and calculate their concentrations

35
Q

What does the intensity of the spectrum indicate?

A

The concentration

36
Q

How do flame tests emit colored light?

A

.As ions heat up, their electrons become excited (move to higher energy levels)
.When the electrons drop down to their original energy levels they release energy as light
.The combination of wavelengths emitted depends on the charge and electron arrangement

37
Q

What is instrumental analysis?

A

Tests that use machines

38
Q

Advantages of instrumental analysis

A

.Very sensitive
.Very fast
.Very accurate
