Chemical building blocks Flashcards

What is a proton?
Particles found in the nucleus of an atom. Protons have a positive electrical charge and the same mass as a neutron.
How does a current model of an atom look like?
It consists of a tiny, dense nucleus, made up of the subatomic particles, protons and neutrons which are surrounded by electrons.
What is neutron?
Tiny particles found in the nucleus of an atom, neutrons have no electrical charge and have the same mass as a proton.
What is an atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of a particular element.
What is the mass number?
It is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom of an element.
What does the mass number depend on and why?
The mass number only depends on protons and neutrons because they have the same mass unlike electrons because electrons are so small that it cant be compared with protons and neutrons.
