Chemical Changes Flashcards

1
Q

When does a displacement reaction occur?

A

A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound
E.g: zinc + copper sulphate -> zinc sulphate + copper

Q

What do most metals make when reacting with an acid?

A

Produce a salt and hydrogen
E.g: zinc + hydrogen chloride -> zinc chloride (salt)+ hydrogen

Q

What do metal carbonates form when reacting with an acid?

A

-a salt
-carbon dioxide
- water
Calcium carbonate + hydrogen chloride-> calcium chloride (salt) + carbon dioxide + water

Q

Why do group 1 metals produce hydrogen and a metal hydroxide?

A

They are more reactive so they displace it to produce hydrogen + metal hydroxide

Q

When do we use displacement reactions?

A

To obtain metals from their ores by displacing with a more reactive, less valuable metal or carbon (cokes)

Q

Where do displacement reactions occur and how ?

A

In a blast furnace: the iron oxide is reduced (oxygen lost) to produce iron

Q

Show me the word equation representation of ion oxide being reduced to produce iron

A

Iron oxide (reduced as it’s lost oxygen) -> carbon dioxide + iron

Q

Do we still use oxidisation and reduction if oxygen is not in a reaction

A

Yes we use it for the loss or gain of electrons in regards to atoms/ions or molecules
