Chemical equilibrium systems Flashcards
(16 cards)
Describe an ‘open system’
Can exchange matter and energy with its surroundings
Describe a ‘closed system’
Can only exchange some form of energy with surroundings
What’s the difference between chemical and physical change?
Chemical = a new substance
Physical = Structural change but the same substance
What is activation energy?
Energy required for a reaction to occur
What is a reactions reversibility based on?
The energy required for the reaction to occur
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
state of balance between forwards and backwards reactions
What does a steeper equilibrium curve signify?
A faster rate of reaction
If equilibrium is on the left, what does it favour?
Reactants
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
A system will partially oppose a change in equilibrium in order to restore balance
What can be done to change the concentration of a substance?
- Add more of it
- Increase/decrease volume
- Dilute the substance
TRUE OR FALSE: a system will favour the reaction with the least number of particles to resore equilibrium
TRUE
TRUE OR FALSE: Mole ratio impacts how much a substance increases/ decreases
TRUE
Recall the concentration formula
c = n/V
What effect does increasing volume have on pressure?
Decreases pressure (vice versa)
How does increasing temperature effect an endothermic reaction? How does it effect exothermic?
Favours the forwards
Favour’s the reverse
