Combustion
A combustion reaction occurs when a substance burns in oxygen.
What does hydrocarbon undergoing combustion produce
A hydrocarbon that undergoes combustion produces carbon dioxide and water.
Give me an example of that
Ethanol burns in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water
Exothermic reaction
If a reaction gives out energy / releases energy to its surroundings, its an exothermic reaction.
What are alcohols
Alcohols are a homologous series
General formula of alcohols
C2H2n+1OH
Properties of alcohols
Alcohols are flammable and soluble in water, they are also colourless
What functional group
-OH Hydroxyl functional group
What are alcohol used as
Alcohol are commonly used as fuels
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance that burns to release/give out energy
Evaluation
For next time, I should minimise heat loss by decreasing the distance between the flames and the copper can. This then makes my experiment more valid and accurate.
