chemical kinetics definitions Flashcards
(8 cards)
activation energy
the minimum amount of energy a reaction entity must possess for a reaction to be successful
activation complex
unstable arrangement of atoms that contain partially formed and unformed bonds
5 basic factors
chemical nature, concentration, surface area, temperature, catalysts
collision theory
states that chemical reactions can only occur if reactants collide with proper orientation and with enough kinetic energy to break reactant bonds and form product bonds
weaker vs. stronger bonds
less activation energy is needed to break weaker bonds
complex molecules
complex molecules contain more bonds, must be broken and in proper orientation
number of bonds per reactant
breaking fewer bonds per reactant allows the reaction to proceed faster
molecules vs. ions
molecules contain covalent bonds which have to be broken so new bonds can form
