Chemical & Physical Reactions Flashcards

1
Q

What is a chemical reaction?

A

When a chemical reaction takes place, one or two new substances are made.

A chemical reaction CANNOT be reversed

Q

Name 5 points from which we know a chemical reaction is taking place

A
  • A change in colour
  • Bubbles that show us a gas is being made
  • A change in mass as a gas escapes
  • Light energy being given out
  • A change in temperature

5
Q

Why is neutralising an acid not a physical change?

A

Because you have 2 reactants that create a new product

8
Q

Hydrogen is lighter than air. What proof of this have you seen in this experiment?

A

The pop was at the top of the test tube as this is where most of the gas was as the hydrogen went up meaning it was lighter than air.

10
Q

Do metals always make hydrogen gas when reacting with acids?

A

No, Copper for example doesn’t react with acids because it’s lower down on the reaction table.

25
Q

A

The variable you keep the same

26
Q

A

The variable that you measure

27
Q

The fire triangle

A

Oxygen, fuel, heat

All 3 are needed

28
Q

Product of burning

A

Carbon dioxide - Co2

29
Q

Differences in PC and CR

A

CR’s cannot be reversed - PC’s can

CR’s create a new chemical substance - PC’s can’t

30
Q

What is complete combustion?

A

When there is enough oxygen for the fuel to combust fully

31
Q

What is incomplete combustion?

A

When there is not enough oxygen so the fuel can not burn fully

32
Q

What is the difference between complete and incomplete combustion?

A

Complete combustion has enough oxygen to burn foully unlike incomplete combustion.
They create different products
Complete combustion creates carbon dioxide
Incomplete combustion creates carbon monoxide (a toxic gas)

33
Q

How can monoxide be dangerous?

A

When breathed it displaces oxygen in the blood

It’s invisible and you can’t smell it

34
Q

What are the similarities of incomplete and complete combustion?

A

A chemical reaction is still occurring between fuel and oxygen to produce heat and light

35
Q

What is a word equation?

A

Describing a chemical reaction with words.

For example 2 reactants changing into a product.

36
Q

Metal + oxygen

A

Metal oxide

37
Q

Element + oxygen

A

Element dioxide
