Chemical Reactions and Balancing Flashcards
(13 cards)
Chemical reaction
- substances interact to form one or more different substances with new properties
- chemical reaction has happened with heat, gas, production, color, change, light, precipitate
chemical equation
Represents a reaction
reactants
Chemicals added together
“arrow” and double arrow meaning
means produces, double arrow indicate “ reversible reaction”
products
Chemicals that are made
State symbols
s= solid
l= liquid
g= gas
aq= aqueous (dissolve in water)
catalyst
-substance that makes a chemical reaction occur faster without being consumed
-usually included above the arrow in an equation
heat
- represented by triangle
- Can be used to speed up a reaction, but is not considered a catalyst because it is a condition, not a chemical
word equation
Includes names of reactants products, and catalyst
skeleton equation
Reactants and products represented by chemical formulas, and relative quantities are not included
balanced chemical equation
Coefficients are added to skeleton equation so number of atoms is the same on both sides, typically include states
counting atoms
Molecules/formula units may have brackets to indicate number of atoms
steps for balancing chemical equations
1) write the skeleton equation
2) balance, metal ions
3) balance, nonmetal atoms except for O and H
4) balance O atoms
5) balance H atoms
6) check your answer by counting atoms
