Chemical reactions and Equations long 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Give an activity on thermal decomposition and the formula.

A

/ Take about 2 g lead nitrate powder in a boiling
tube.
/ Hold the boiling tube with a pair of tongs and
heat it over a flame
/ The emission of brown fumes of nitrogen dioxide is observed.

Formula - 2Pb(NO3)^2 Heat →2PbO + 4NO^2+ O2

Q

What are the types of decomposition and give example of 2 of them ?

A

The three primary types of decomposition reactions are:

Thermal decomposition reaction -

A thermal decomposition reaction can be defined as a decomposition reaction that is initiated by Heat.

Electrolytic decomposition reaction:

An electrolytic decomposition reaction is a type of decomposition reaction in which the activation energy for decomposition is provided in the form of electrical energy.

example-2H^2^O → 2H2 + O2

Photolytic decomposition:

A photodecomposition reaction is a type of decomposition reaction in which the reactant is broken down by absorbing energy

example- AgCl → sunlight 2Ag + Cl2

Q

What happens in the sliver chloride activity ?

A

White sliver chloride is placed in sunlight. After some time You will see that white silver chloride turns grey in sunlight. This is due to the decomposition of silver chloride into silver and chlorine by light.
2AgCl Sunlight → 2Ag + Cl2
Silver bromide also behaves in the same way.
2AgBr Sunlight → 2Ag + Br2
The above reactions are used in black and white photography.
