What part of a compound can be deduced using the flame test?
Positive metal ion
What material wire do you use for the flame test?
Platinum or Nichrome
Why do we use the materials we do, for the wire in the flame test?
- Doesn’t produce a colour in the flame test
- High melting point
- Unreactive/inert
What solution is the wire dipped into, in the flame test?
Hydrochloric acid
Why do we dip the wire into a solution, in the flame test?
- To sterilise/clean the wire so it’s not contaminated
- To make sure the substance sticks to the wire
What colour does Lithium produce in the flame test?
Red
What colour does Sodium produce in the flame test?
Yellow
What colour does Potassium produce in the flame test?
Lilac
What colour does Calcium produce in the flame test?
Orange-red
What colour does Copper produce in the flame test?
Blue-green
What part of a compound can occasionally be deduced by adding sodium hydroxide?
Positive ion/cation
What is the positive result for Copper upon addition of NaOH (sodium hydroxide)?
Blue
What is the positive result for Iron (ii) upon addition of NaOH (sodium hydroxide)?
Green
What is the positive result for Iron (iii) upon addition of NaOH (sodium hydroxide)?
Brown
What is the positive result for Ammonium upon addition of NaOH (sodium hydroxide)?
Fizzing as ammonia gas is produced
What is the chemical test for carbonate anions?
Hydrochloric acid
Positive result: fizzing as CO2 is produced
What is the chemical test for sulphate anions?
Barium chloride
Positive result: white precipitate
How do you test for halide anions?
Add nitric acid and silver nitrate solution (to form acidified silver nitrate)
