Chemical Tests Flashcards
(21 cards)
What does silver nitrate test for?
Halide ions
What colour precipitate does chlorine make with silver nitrate?
White precipitate
What colour precipitate does bromine make with silver nitrate?
Cream
What colour precipitate does iodine make with silver nitrate?
Yellow
What are the halide ion solutions made of?
The non-metal ions plus dilute nitric acid
What is the test for carbonates?
React with dilute hydrochloride acid. Pass gas through limewater. Limewater turns cloudy/milky white when CO2 present
What is the test for sulfates?
Barium chloride solution.
Sulfate ion solution with dilute hydrochloride acid
Will result m white precipitate
How do test for metal ions?
Using sodium hydroxide solution
What is the test for iron (II)?
With sodium hydroxide a dark green precipitate is formed
What is the test for iron (III)?
With sodium hydroxide a dark brown precipitate will form
What is the test for aluminium ions?
Will form a white precipitate with sodium hydroxide
- will become colourless when excess sodium hydroxide is added
- this is the same for zinc ions
What is the test for magnesium ions?
With sodium hydroxide a white precipitate will form
_ same for calcium ions

how do you test for SO2?
KMnO4 - postassium manganate
will turn purple to colourless
how do you test for H2S?
mix with lead ethanoate
black ptt. formed
