Chemistry #1 Flashcards
(18 cards)
Atom
The smallest unit of an element
Nucleus
It is the center of atoms. It is composed of Neutrons and contains most of an atom’s mass
Proton
Is a positively charged particle and is found within an atomic nucleus
Neutron
Is an uncharged particle and is found within an atomic nucleus
Electron
Is a negatively charged particle and is located in shells that surround an atom’s nucleus
Molecule
Is a group of atoms together which makes the smallest unit of a chemical compound
Quark
Makes up particles
Alkali Metals
Alkali matals are the metals in group 1 of the periodic table. They act aggressively to anything.
Cations
Cations are atoms that result in a positive charge after a number of electron has been removed from a shell
Anions
Ations are atoms that result in a negative charge after a number of electrons have been added on to a shell.
Noble Gases
Noble gases are gases that are unreactive. They include: Helium, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, Neon and Radon.
Valence Shells
The outermost shell of an atom (shells are in an atom)
Valence Electron
The electron in the outermost shell in an atom
Octet
A group of 8 electrons in a shell
Ions
an atom or molecule with an electrical charge due to a loss or gain of electron(s).
Alchemist
An olden day scientist who mixed chemicals, they tried to change ordinary metals in to gold and also tried to predict the future.
Element
Pure substance made up of only one type of atom
Isotopes
2 or more forms of the same element with equal number of protons, but different number of neutrons in the nucleus
