chemistry Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is the Atomic number
Number of protons in nucleus
What is the Mass number?
The sum of a number of protons and neutrons present in the nucleus of an atom
How to find the electron?
Same as Protons
HOW TO FIND THE NEUTRON?
Subtract the atomic number from the mass number
HOW TO FIND THE MASS NUMBER
mass number = protons + neutrons.
How do Solid particles move?
They move tightly together and slow movement.
How do Liquid particles move?
close together and random movement.
How do Gas particles move
Very fast in all direction
Condensation
Gas to liquid
Sublimation
Solid to gas
Deposition
Gas to solid
Vaporization
Liquid to gas
Melting
Solid to liquid
Freezing
liquid to solid
Example: sugar dissolves into water, what is the solute?
sugar
Example: sugar dissolves into water, what is the Solvent?
water
What does ‘concentration of a solution’ mean?
The concentration of a solution tells us how much solute is mixed with the solvent.
How does a solution become saturated?
when no more solute will dissolve in the solvent
What is an element?
A pure substance made of one type of atom
What is a mixture?
A mixture is formed when two or more elements or compounds are present without being chemically bonded together
What is a compound?
Made of two or more atoms of different elements, such as water (H2O) and methane (CH4).
HOw does an atom stay stable?
the outer shell of valence electrons needs to be full
How is an atom unstable
incomplete outer shell
How do atoms fill their outer shells to become stable?
Reacting with other atoms!
