chemistry Flashcards
(22 cards)
Atoms
the smallest unit of an element
Molecules
a group of two or more atoms that form the smallest identifiable unit into which a pure substance can be divided and still retain the composition and chemical properties of that substance
Substances
a particular kind of matter with uniform properties.
Heterogeneous Mixtures
a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
Homogeneous Mixtures
contains two or more substances that are evenly distributed with each other
Chemical Properties
a property of a substance that is observed when a substance undergoes a chemical change
physical property
color, hardness, malleability, solubility, electrical conductivity, density, melting point, and boiling point
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
elements
a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means
Compounds
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
Reactants
a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
products
an article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale.
Hydrogen Bonds
a special type of dipole-dipole attraction between molecules, not a covalent bond to a hydrogen atom
Covalent Bonds
the inter atomic linkage that results from the sharing of an electron pair between two atoms
Ionic Bonds
type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound
Cation
a positively charged ion, i.e. one that would be attracted to the cathode in electrolysis.
Anion
a negatively charged ion, i.e. one that would be attracted to the anode in electrolysis.
Periodic Table-Groups
Groups are numbered 1–18 from left to right
table groups
a single component that contains many tables, each with its own unique data
pH scale
It is a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of aqueous solutions
Acids
A chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water and forms salts by combining with certain metals
Bases
plural form of base
