Chemistry Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the Atomic number?
The number of protons in an atom.
What is an isotope?
An isotope is an atom with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons (NOTE: isotope translates to ‘same’ and ‘place’).
What is the equation for relative mass (AR)?
Ar=(mass x abundance) + (mass x abundance) / total abundance
What does the group number show?
It shows the number of electrons in the outer shell.
What do the period shells show?
The period numbers show how many electron shells there are.
Who created the plum pudding model?
JJ Thompson (he worked out: atoms are spheres of positive charge and electrons have negative charge).
Who created the nuclear model?
E. Rutherford (he worked out: atoms are made up of mostly empty space, positive charge was in the centre of the atom called nucleus, surrounded by negative electrons in orbit).
