What are Homogenous Mixtures?
Homogenous mixtures have particles that are distributed evenly and have a uniform composition.
What are Heterogenous Mixtures?
Heterogenous mixtures are those whose composition is not uniform.
What are Solutions?
A solution is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances, with a solute dissolved in a solvent.
What are Suspensions?
Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures containing particles that will settle in solvents.
What are Colloids?
A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture that contains particles that do not settle out of solution.
What is filtration?
A solution is put through filter paper, leaving solute inside the filter paper and solvent in the bottom of the flask/beaker.
What is evaporation?
A solution is boiled, causing the solvent to evaporate and leaving the solute.
What is distillation?
A solution is boiled, and the solvent in gas form rises to the top and is condensed back into liquid, forming pure distillate.
What is chromatography?
A substance is placed on chromatography paper in water, and based on solubility, the substance travels up the paper.
What is sedimentation?
A solution with suspended particles is left to settle, allowing insoluble particles to sink and form a sediment layer.
What is magnetic separation?
A magnet is held towards a substance made of magnetic and non-magnetic particles, attracting the magnetic particles.
What is crystallisation?
A solution is boiled, causing the solvent to evaporate and the solute to crystallise.
What is centrifugation?
A solution is spun at rapid speeds until solid particles separate.
What is sieving?
A method used to separate particles based on size.
What is a separating funnel?
A device used to separate immiscible liquids based on density.
