What is an atom?
The atom is a basic unit of matter, which cannot be broken down into anything simpler by chemical reactions.
What is a chemical element?
A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of only one type of atom.
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more elements or compounds, which can be separated by physical means.
What is a compound?
A combination of two or more elements chemically bonded together in fixed proportions, which cannot be separated by physical means.
What is atomic number?
The number of protons in a nucleus of an atom.
What is atomic mass?
The number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus of an atom.
What is a positive ion?
The result of an atom (metal or hydrogen) losing one or more electrons.
What is a negative ion?
The result of an atom (non-metals) gaining one or more electrons.
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metals.
What is a solvent?
A liquid that solids dissolve in.
What is a solute?
The solid that dissolves in a solvent.
What is a solution?
A mixture of the dissolved solid and solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that no more solute can be dissolved in at a stated temperature.
