Chemistry Flashcards
(16 cards)
Word equation for combustion
Fuel + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
What is an Element
A pure substance made up of only one type of atom and cannot be split into anything simpler
What is a compound
Is a substance made of 2 or more different elements and cannot be easily separated
What is a mixture
Is composed of 2 or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined
What is an ionic bond
A bond formed by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, resulting in complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another
Term electrolysis
The breakdown of a compound using electricity
Material used for anode and why
Graphite (Carbon C) because it doesn’t react with electrolyte or products formed during electrolysis
How do electrolytes conduct electricity
Through the movement of charged partials called ions
What is neutralisation
The reaction between an acid and alkali in the correct proportions to produce a salt and water
What happens in neutralisation
The alkali is added from the burette to the acid in the beaker. The PH of the reaction is monitored using a PH probe. The volume of alkali required to neutralise the acid and the PH of the alkali can be deducted from the neutralisation graph
Formation of salt
A salt is a compound formed when some or all the hydrogen ions in an acid are replaced by metal ions or ammunium ions
What is an ion
An ion is a charged particle. They are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons to form a full outer shell.
What is electrolyte
A liquid that will conduct and be broken down by electricity. It will not conduct electricity when it is solid.
How is a metal ion formed
When the metal loses 1 electron
How to increase rate of reaction
Catalyst
Increasing concentration
Term polymerisation
Many small molecules (monomers) can be joined to make polymers
