cellular respiration
chemical equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
physical property
not associated with a change in its vhemical composition (eg density, colour, hardness, melting)
physical change
change in state/properties of without an accompanying change in the chemical composition eg ice/water
chemical property
the change of one type of matter into another eg coking an egg, iron rusting
- resulting substances have different properties b/c atoms and molecules are arranged differently
what are isomers
isomers are compounds with the same chemical formula but different molecular structure.
calcuate 1 amu equation
1/atomic mass x atomic mass/avo constant
eq to calcuate number of moles
mass/molar mass
rules for asigning oxidation numbers
- oxidation number of an atom in an elemental substance is zero
- the oxidation # of a monatomic iion is equal to the ion’s charge
- oxidation #’s for common non metals are assigned the following rules
HYDROGEN: +1 combined w nonmetals
-1 combined with metals
OXYGEN: -2 in most compouds
stoichiometry steps
BALANCE EQUATION: eg C3H6 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O == 2C3H6 + 9O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
CALCULATE # of moles: # molecules/ avo’s constant eg (for o2, mass of co2 3.011 x 10^23) 9/6 x 5 = 7.5 moles
multiply # of moles x MM
convert to kg
