Chemistry 1b Flashcards
(32 cards)
How does cracking occur?
Heat long chain
Vapour passed over powdered aluminium oxide catalyst at 400 - 700 degrees Celsius
Form alkanes and alkenes
What is cracking?
Splitting up long hydrocarbons.
What are alkenes?
Have a double bond
Unsaturated
CnH2n
How do you test for alkenes?
Bromine water decolourises in presence of double bond as double bond opens up and forms bonds with bromine. (Previously orange).
How can ethene produce ethanol?
Hydrated with steam
Cheap
Non renewable
How can ethanol be made?
Fermentation of sugar
Renewable
Cheap
Needs to be purified
How can alkenes be used to make polymers?
Polymerisation
Join small alkenes (monomers) to form polymers
What created flexible polymers?
2000 pressured and 200 degrees Celsius
What makes rigid polymers?
60 degrees Celsius and few atmospheres pressures with a catalyst
What are the uses of polymers?
Lycra fibre
Waterproof coatings
Biodegradable packaging
Memory foam
How are plant oils extracted?
Crushed, press, centrifuge separates
Solvents get oil, distillation refines by getting rid of solvents, water and impurities
Why are vegetable oils used in food?
Essential fatty acids
Energy
Vitamin E
What benefits does vegetable oil have for cooking?
Lower boiling point
Different flavour
Increases energy
What do unsaturated oils contain?
Double bonds
How are unsaturated oils hydrogenated?
Reacted with hydrogen over a nickel catalyst at 60 degrees Celsius
What are the properties of hydrogenated vegetable oils?
High melting points =spreads
Cheaper
Trans fats =bad for you
What is bad about vegetable oil?
Saturated = increase cholesterol
Fattening
What at emulsions?
Droplets of liquid suspended in another liquid.
What are uses of emulsions?
Paint Mayonnaise Salad dressing Milk Ice cream Moisturising lotion
What are emulsifiers?
Hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail
What are the prod and cons of emulsifiers?
Pros - longer shelf life
- lower in fat
Cons - allergies
What led to the theory of continental drift?
Matching layers of rocks
Fit like jigsaws
Fossils found in ‘wrong places’
Why wast Wegener’s theory accepted for many years?!
Impossible tidal forces
Used inaccurate data
Wasn’t proper geologist
What is the structure of earth?
Very thin crust
Mantle
Iron and nickel core
