Chemistry Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is a molecule
Two or more Atoms that are chemically combined
What is an element
Pure substance that cannot be broken down into any simpler chemical
What is a compound
A pure substance composed of two or more different Atoms joined together
What is a particle
Any of the basic units of matter and energy. for example Atom molecule element compound
What do atoms and ions have in common
Single particle, protons, neutrons, electrons
How does an ion differ from an Atom
Ions are charged which is caused by an in balance of protons and electrons.
How does an atom differ from ion
No charge, balance of protons and electrons, valence either full/stable or unfull and unstable
Why do ions form
They form to fill valence orbits and become stable
If an atom and ion loses electrons it has what kind of charge
Positive charge also known as a cation
If an Adam and an ion gains electrons what charge will it have
A negative charge also known anion
Negative ions and in blank
ide
Example: Fluoride
Do metals tend to gain or lose electrons
Lose
Do nonmetals tend to gain or lose electrons
Gain
Ionic compounds are composed of what
A metal and a nonmetal
Are metals cations or anions
Cations
Are nonmetals anions or cations
Anions
What is the formula for an ion
The first element is positive the second is negative
Crisscross the numbers
Divide to get the lowest subscripts
Exp: Mg3 N2
What are the elements in HOFBrINCl
Hydrogen, oxygen, flooring, bromine, iodine, nitrogen, chlorine
What is a polyatomic ion
And I am made up of more than one eye on that acts as a single particle
What is a diatomic molecule
From molecule that’s found in its natural form as two atoms (the HOFBrINCl )
What is a covalent bond
Electrons are shared so that each element can have a full outer orbit
What is the difference between ionic compounds and molecular compounds
Ionic compounds have an ionic bond, a nonmetal plus a metal, and they give or take electrons. Molecular compounds have covalent bonds, two nonmetals and electrons shared
And molecular compounds you use the prefixes to name. What are they?
Mono 1 Di 2 Tri 3 Tetra 4 Penta 5 Hexa 6 Hepta 7 Octa 8 Nona 9 Deca 10
How to name ionic compounds
- Metal first nonmetal second
2. change metal and to ide
