Q

When does dynamic equilibrium occur?

A

Dynamic equilibrium occurs when the reaction becomes reversible.

Q

What happens to a salt when it reaches dynamic equlibrium?

A

No more salt turns into ions, and vice versa (and the solution is said to be saturated).

7
Q

Why doesn’t the amount of solid salts change the position of the equilibrium constant?

A

When the ions in solution re-form the solid, they do so on the surface of the solid. Thus doubling the surface area of the solid not only doubles the rate of dissolving, but also doubles the rate of re-formation of the solid. The amount of excess solid present therefore has no effect on the equilibrium position.
1/1 = 1
2/2 = 1
Same thing mamasita
Similarly, if you gring up the salt, it’ll make it dissolve faster, but it won’t change the equilibrium position.

Q

What is the solubility product?

A

It’s the equilbirum constant of a salt (that only has one value) at a given temperature

Q

How do you calculate the ksp from the solubility of the solid salt?

A

You assume that the solubility is the equilibrium concentrations (but multiply the coefficients accordingly first) and then calculate the ksp from there by multiplying the concentrations.

Q

How do you find solubility from ksp?

A

Assume that x is the solubility and find x using the ksp.

Q

A larger Ksp value (when the ions that the salt dissolves into are the same) means…

A

The salt is more soluble, and vice versa

15
Q

Can we always check relative solubility using Ksp?

A

No, because the ions that a salt produces also plays a role in determining the solubility.

It’s better to calculate it normally in this case

Q

If X- is an effective base, aka an weak acid, what will happen to the solubility of the salt?

A

It will increase

Also vice versa

17
Q

What’s the ion product?

A

It’s the same thing as Ksp but with initial concenctrations

18
Q

If Q>k…

A

Precipitate occurs

19
Q

I

If Q<k

A

No preciptate occurs

20
Q

How do you perform selective precipitation?

A

It’s performed by using a reegant that seperates ions only form with one or a few metal io ns in the mixture.
