Chemistry: Last Cycle Test (1.6.22) Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is an atom?
An atom is any particle of matter at its most basic level which contains at least one proton.
What is an element?
An element is a substance made from only one type of atom.
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance made from different types of atoms joined together.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains different particles.
What is decomposition?
Decomposition is the breakdown or change of a material or substance into other chemical compounds.
What are control variables?
A control variable is a factor that is kept the same for every test or measurement in order to make sure that the results can be compared fairly.
What happens in an exothermic rxn?
- Thermal energy is released as heat
- The hotter something becomes , the more energy it has released
What happens in an endothermic rxn?
- Absorbs heat
- Cools the surroundings
What are the properties of solids?
- relatively rigid
- definite volume and shape
- atoms and molecules are attached together
What are the properties of liquids?
- definite volume but able to change shape by flowing
- atoms and molecules are loosely bonded
What are the properties of gases?
-no definite volume or shape
What are the properties of metals?
- High melting points
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- High density
- Malleable
What are the non-metals in the periodic table? (hint:11)
- hydrogen -phosphorus
- helium -sulphur
- carbon -chlorine
- nitrogen -argon
- oxygen -flourine
- neon
What are the metals in the periodic table? (hint:7)
- Lithium -Beryllium
- Sodium -Magnesium
- Aluminium -Potassium
- Calcium
How do you compare the thermal stability of different metal carbonates?
The carbonates become more thermally stable down the group.
