Chemistry: Matter Flashcards
3 States of Matter
Solid, liquid, gas
What is Matter
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles to spread out and fill the available space. e.g:nail varnish
Water ➡️ steam
1cm3 of water = 1000cm3 of steam
Melting
From solid to liquid
e.g: ice-cre
Freezing
To liquid to solid
E.g: iceberg
Evaporation
Liquid to gas
E.g: boiling water
Condensation
Gas to liquid
E.g: windows on a cold morning
What are the particles always doing
Vibrating
Melting Point
The temperature at which the solid changes to a liquid
Solubility
The number of grams of solute that will dissolve at a given temperature
Crystallisation
When crystals form by cooling a saturated solution
Element
A substance that cannot be split up into simpler substances by chemical means
Copper, oxygen
Compound
A substance that is made of 2 or more substances chemically combined
Copper sulfate, water, carbon dioxide
Mixture
2 or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined
Coffee, weetabix
