Chemistry: Unit 2 Flashcards
(35 cards)
Chemistry
identification of substances of which matter is composed; investigation of their properties and the ways which they interact, combine and change
Matter
physical and chemical structure: matter is made up of atoms
Extensive Properties
such as mass and volume; depend on the amount of matter being measured
Intensive properties
such as density and color; do not depend on amount of substance present
Mass
measure of the amount of matter in an object
Volume
space occupied by a liquid, solid or gas
Physical property
any property that is measurable
Physical change
changes affecting the form of a chemical substance but not it’s chemical composition
Chemical property
a property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction where the chemical composition is changed
Chemical change
chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms, resulting in the formation of at least one new substance. EX: formation of rust on iron
Phase (phase of matter)
the states in which matter can exist. When temperature changes, matter can undergo a phase change
Solid
firm and stable in shape
Liquid
a substance that flows freely and has constant volume
Gas
airlike fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available
Freezing
where a liquid turns into a solid below the temperature of 32 degrees F
Melting
where a solid turns to liquid. typically by heat or pressure
Vaporization
a phase transition from the liquid phase to vapor
Condensation
conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid
Sublimation
when anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming liquid. Ex: surface layer of snow or ice turns into fog or steam without melting
Deposition
solidification of a vapor by cooling
Substance (pure substance)
substances that are made of only one type of atom
Element
a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Chemical symbol
an abbreviation or short representation of a chemical element
Compound
a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together
