Chemistry Unit Test Flashcards
(25 cards)
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space
Pure substance
Substance made of only one kind of matter, which has a unique set of properties
Solution
Homogeneous mixture; mixture of two or more pure substances that looks like one substance
( Solution is known as a homogeneous mixture)
Homogeneous mixture
Is a solid, liquid or gaseous mixture, that has the same proportions of its components through any given sample
Heterogeneous mixture
Has components whose proportions very throughout the sample
Mechanical mixture
Mixture in which the different substances that make up the mixture are visible
(Mechanical mixture is a heterogeneous mixture)
Physical change
Change in the appearance or state of a substance that does not change the composition
Chemical change
Change that results when two or more substances react to create a different substance or substances; The new substances have completely different properties from the original ones
Chemical property
Description of how a substance interacts with other substances, such as acids; chemical properties are observable only when a chemical change occurs
Physical property
Property that describes a physical appearance and composition of a substance
Noble gases
Group 18 elements in the periodic table; the most stable and unreactive elements
Alkaline earth metal
Group 2 elements in the periodic table; There reactivity is not as strong as that of the alkali metals
Alkali metals
Group 1 elements in the periodic table, not including hydrogen; the most reactive of the metals
Halogens
Group 17 elements in the periodic table; the most reactive nonmetals
Molecular compounds
Pure substance formed when non-metals combine
Combustion reactions
Chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen reacts with a substance to form a new substance and give off energy
Inhibitor
A substance that slows down or prevents a particular chemical reaction or of the process which reduces the reaction of a particular reactant, catalyst, and enzyme
Catalyst
Substance that helps a chemical reaction to proceed more quickly
Reactant
Substance that reacts with another substance or substances in a chemical reaction to create new substances with different properties
Chemical reaction
A reaction that takes place when two or more substances react to form new substances
Enzyme
Catalyst involved in chemical reactions in living things
