Chemistry Vocab Flashcards
(31 cards)
Single Bond
Straight bond involving 2 atoms and 2 electrons (one from each). All single bonds are straight bonds
Double Bond
Involve 2 atoms and 4 electrons. Curved bond
Triple Bond
Involve to 2 atoms and 6 electrons. Curved Bond. Only Nitrogen, Carbon, and Boron can form this bond.
Coefficient
It’s the number in front of a formula that tells you how many molecules of a formula there are.
Subscript
The number of atoms of an element in a formula. It’s a smaller number that goes down and to the right.
Noble Gases
Last group in the periodic table, odorless and colorless
Halogens
Group 7a on periodic table, highly reactive elements
Alkali Earth metals
Group 2a on periodic table, occur in nature, lose 2 valence electrons in bonding.
Alkali Metals
A highly reactive element. Ex: Lithium, Sodium, potassium, and rubidium
States of Matter
Solid (Something tangible that doesn’t take shape of it’s container), Liquid (Takes shape of it’s container), Gas (intangible and takes shape of its container).
Atom
Matter Building blocks. Protons, Neutrons, and electrons.
Element
Pure substance, have the same atomic number and protons.
Nucleus
The center of an atom, protons and neutrons are inside.
Proton
Positively charged particles
Electron
Negatively charged particles
Neutron
Neutrally charged particles
Atomic Number
How many protons an element has and the top number on an element in the periodic table
Atomic Mass
Approx. how much one atom of an element weighs, bottom number on the periodic table
Atomic Symbol
Symbol of an element, first letter capital second lower case
Electron Shell/Cloud
The outside electron ring in an atom
Valence Electron
The electrons on the outer most shell of an atom.
Dmitri Mendeleev
He ordered the elements on the periodic table by their masses
Groups
Columns in a periodic table
Periods
Rows in a periodic table
