Q

What happens in a physical change?

A

In a physical change, a substance changes in size, shape, state, or two substances are mixed together. No new substances are formed. So when a physical change occurs to a compound, the molecules change their position or motion. But the bonds that hold them together are not broken and so the same number and type of molecules remain after the change

Q

What happens in a chemical change?

A

In a chemical change gas, heat or light are often released, and the change usually can not be undone. A new substance is formed. During a chemical change, some of the chemical bonds between atoms are broken and new bonds are formed. This re-arrangement of atoms is what produces a new substance.

15
Q

What is a chemical symbol for an element?

A

A chemical symbol is one or two letters, usually derived from the element they represent. For example, the chemical symbol for calcium is Ca. t is important to remember that the first letter of a symbol is always upper-case, and the second is always lower-case.

16
Q

How many types of atoms are there in an element?

A

one. Although the atoms within an element are always arranged in different ways.

17
Q

What is an element with a single atom called?

A

monatomic.

18
Q

What is a cluster of atoms called?

A

a molecule

19
Q

What is lattice?

A

lattices are a type of element, in which the atoms within it are composed in a grid-like structure.

20
Q

What are the physical properties of an element?

A

Physical properties include whether the element is solid, liquid or gas, its melting and boiling points, how well it conducts heat or electricity and if it can bend or whether it breaks if is applied.

21
Q

Describe any observations that indicate that a chemical change has occurred

A
change in colour
change in temperature
production of light or sound
the disappearance of a solid
formation of a new solid
formation of new gas – may be indicated by fizzing or a new odour
22
Q

What is the reactant in a chemical change?

A

A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.

23
Q

What is the product in a chemical change?

A

Products are the substances formed from chemical reactions.

24
Q

How would you write a word equation for the following? When a strip of Magnesium is added to hydrochloric acid, magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas are formed.

A

Magnesium + hydrochloric acid -> magnesium chloride+ hydrogen gas.

25
Q

Describe the nucleus and electron shells of an atom

A

A nucleus is the centre of the atom. Protons and neutrons are found in this nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by electron shells, these shells hold the electrons.

26
Q

Define the term atomic number

A

An atomic number refers to the number of protons within an atom.

27
Q

Define the term mass number

A

A mass number refers to the total number of protons, neutrons and electrons within an atom.

28
Q

How do you write the symbol for an atom?

A

The first one or two letters of the atom are placed on right while the mass number is displayed on the upper right, and the atomic number is displayed on the lower left.

29
Q

What is a chemical compound?

A

a substance formed from two or more elements chemically united in fixed proportions.

30
Q

Define the terms pure substance and mixture.

A

A pure substance is a substance that only contains one type of compound or one type of element. Whereas a mixture is a substance that contains two or more elements/compounds that are not chemically bonded.

31
Q

Describe how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table

A

The periodic table of elements arranges all of the known chemical elements in an informative array. Elements are arranged from left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. Order generally coincides with increasing atomic mass. The rows are called periods.

32
Q

Which substances on the periodic table are metals, non-metals, and metalloids?

A

Metals. In the periodic table, you can see a stair-stepped line starting at Boron (B), atomic number 5, and going all the way down to Polonium (Po), atomic number 84. Except for Germanium (Ge) and Antimony (Sb), all the elements to the left of that line can be classified as metals. If this is hard to understand refer to the image in the science book.
