how do you know when to report signs?
presence of a single sign doesnt prove abuse is occurring in a family
When signs appear repeatedly or in combo, should take closer look at situation and consider the possibility

sudden change in behavior or school performance
no help for physical/medical problems brought to the parents’ attention
learning problems that cant be attributed to physical or psychological causes
always watchful
Lacks supervision
overly compliant, passive, or withdrawn
Comes to school or other activities early, stays late, and does not want to go home
how to recognize child abuse or neglect in the parent?
shows apathy for child
Denies existence of/blames child for child’s problems in school or home
Asks teachers or caretakers to use physical discipline if child misbehaves
Sees the child as entirely bad, worthless
Demands physical/academic performance the child cant achieve
Looks to the child for care, attention, satisfaction of emotional needs

what are the signs of physical abuse in the child?
unexplained burns, bites, bruises, broken bones, black eyes.
fading bruises or marks noticeable after absence from school.
frightened of parents and protests or cries when going home.

how do you recognize Child Abuse or Neglect in the parent AND child?
Rarely touch or look at each other. (no bonding)
Consider their relationship entirely negative.
State that they do not like each other

Offers conflicting, unconvincing, no explanation for child’s injury. (inconsistent)
Describes child as “evil,” or other negative way.
Uses harsh physical discipline.

Usually twisting, not breaking in half
