Characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (3)
- restricted repertoire of activities, repeated routine
- impaired verbal/nonverbal communication, lots of imagination
- impaired social interactions, adverse response to extra stimuli
Childhood disintegrative disorder (3)
Requires impairment in at least 2/3 areas:
- social interaction/nonverbal behaviors, peer relationships, social reciprocity
- communication. delay of speech. unable to initiate or sustain conversation. repetitive use of language
- restricted, reptitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and mannerisms
Asperger’s disorder
- impaired social interaction
- restricted patters
- NO delay in language
- NO cognitive delay
Pica
eating non-nutritive substances (like dirt) for at least one month
Rumination disorder
- mentally retarded children (3months-1 year) or bulimic
- period of normal function and then
- child regurgitates/rechews food
- does this for satisfaction..
Reactive Attachment Disorder
- emotionally withdrawn behavior towards caregivers
- persistent social and emotional disturbance
- risk factor: child has experienced pattern of extremes of insufficient care
Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder
- child actively approaches unfamiliar adults
- risk factor: child has experienced pattern of extremes of insufficient care
- child has developmental level >12 months
ADD/ADHD
inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity
Disruptive, Impulse control
- cannot self-control emotion and behavior
- child manifestation of antisocial personality disorder
- ADHD is comorbidity
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation
extreme lack of behavior control in a persistent way (not episodic) with irritability (whereas bipolar is episodic)
Intermittent Explosive Disorder
child must be at least 6 yrs of age. similar to dysruptive mood dysregulation
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- angry/irritable mood
- argumentative/defiant
- vindictive (revengeful)
Conduct Disorder:
- child onset must have at least one behavior before 10 yrs old
- adolescent onset means no behaviors prior to 10 yrs old
- Aggression
- Destruction of Property
- Decietful/theft
- Serious violation of rules
- limited prosocial emotions
- lack of guilt/empathy
- lack of concern over performance
- shallow affect
Separation anxiety disorder
- repeated distress when separated from home or major figure
- worry about losing or harm befalling major figure
- refuse to go to school or places bc of fear of separation
- fearful to be alone
- can’t sleep unless near major figure
- nightmares of separation
- physical complaints (headache, stomachache) when separation is anticipated
Encopresis
Feces are passed into inappropriate places at least once a month
Enuresis
nighttime urine accidents in children who are 5 yrs or older
Tourette’s syndrome
multiple motor and/or vocal tics
Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder characteristics of the tics:
involuntary, sudden, ejaculatory, recurrent, repetitive, non-rhythmic/interval, purposeless
Child Depressive Disorder
5 behavioral, 4 mood
anhedonia depressed mood hopeless, worthless angry, defiant, irritable stomachaches and headaches decreased energy social withdrawal low grades and missing school
IQ range for mild and moderate impairment
mild: 50-70
moderate: 35-50
3 mechanisms of Down’s
- trisomy 21
- nondisjunction -> mosaicism
- translocation 15:21
what age of mother does risk of Down’s of child start to increase?
32+ years
progression of Down’s
relatively normal for first 6-12 months
all downhill from there, decline of IQ, marked deterioriation by 30s to 40s (brain degenerates similar to Alzheimer’s)
